[ Overall, the last time that Shoyo had been in Tokyo had been a whirlwind of a rollercoaster ride. There were no other words to describe it, and it was a time in his life that he would never forget. There were fond memories, like the borrowed scarf from Bokuto that had kept him warm on his jog back to the hotel. There were thrilling tales, like making it through to the quarter-finals after so many grueling matches, some against friends. There were regrets too, of course, like allowing himself to fall out of shape at such a critical moment. Logically, he knew that no one blamed him more than he blamed himself. He had been so happy in those moments, that handful of days, and it had hurt to be ripped away from the court so soon.
It had been an important lesson, too.
He doesn't hold any grudges against Tokyo, and as he steps off the train, he takes in a deep breath. The air is far from the clear, refreshing stuff of Miyagi, but it was still exhilarating to be in the heart of their nation. Even more exciting was the thought of finally seeing Bokuto again, not just to talk about volleyball, but to hang out as friends. He still felt a little tentative about dropping in on him like this—not that they hadn't planned it at length—but sometimes it was hard to imagine he could just go and stay with one of the top aces in the country!
Hiking his bag a little higher on his shoulder, he looks down at his directions and starts winding his way through the station. It's easy for someone as small as him to get lost in a crowd, but he quickly darts between people and jumps up now and then to get a better look at his surroundings. Now if he could just spot Bokuto... ]
[This year's Nationals was hard work, Bokuto will admit. And while he didn't get to face off with Sakusa again (he'll get him one day!), Kamomedai was more than just an obstacle to overcome. And while he wanted a win with all his heart, he also felt the need that he had to avenge his pupil! Of course, any such exclamation like that got an eye-roll but Bokuto didn't care.
And they did win. A match that went into five sets, much similar to the warzone that was Shiratorizawa versus Karasuno. Bokuto had to hand it to Akaashi, the man pulled them through thick and thin. His dream to win Nationals at least one year during high school came true and he wanted nothing more than that.
Except maybe move on to the pro league. But he's still working on that. Right now he has a guest he can barely wait to see and he's holding himself back from climbing on some bench to call out to him. When the crowd doesn't thin out and he still can't find Hinata, he decides to do what he does the best-]
Hinataaa!! Hey hey hey! Where are you!?
[Of course, people that were next to him got scared out of their minds. But this will work, right?]
[ In the distance, Shoyo can hear the familiar call. He grins and thinks of an owl hooting to another, so very like Bokuto to do even in a crowded train station. Bouncing along towards the sound, he drops his back and springs into the air towards Bokuto. Somehow, he looks even bigger than before, and Shoyo doesn’t hesitate to bump straight into him when he knows that he can handle it. ]
Here! I’m here!
[ He grins and hugs Bokuto tightly, feet dangling a few inches from the ground. They’re definitely making a spectacle, given how people are chattering and grumbling around them, but he’s too happy to care. Seeing Bokuto is a treat, and they’re spending days together! ]
How’re you? It’s funny seeing you out of uniform! Is your place far from here? What do you want to do first today?
[Bokuto's brain comes to a screeching halt. And he checks message again. Okay so he didn't read wrong- Sakusa IS implying he likes how Bokuto looks. Okay, okay, that's... okay, that's exciting a bit.
(He wants to ease Bokuto into it, even though there's a chance that his pace might frustrate the latter. Bokuto is a special case. His explosive personality is a little too much for Sakusa, but oh what would he do to make that body shake in other ways.)
[To say that he's been miserable after the loss at Nationals would be an understatement of the decade. He had tried, he really did, for the sake of everyone else, to remain upbeat and positive and not let himself think and focus on what happened but damn it all- it hurt. It really hurt. The win was right there, hanging in front of his eyes after so many years chasing after it, only to slip away again. His team was amazing, but it rested on his shoulders as an ace to bring them victory. But he didn't. And he couldn't stop thinking about it.
Of course, the school praised them as the second strongest in Japan, there was celebration and congratulations, but after everything was said and done, Bokuto went into a bit of a daze. It wasn't a full slump like usual, where his mood would plummet so bad that he's incapable of thinking. But it was still there, in his posture, with his shoulders slouched forward a bit. ...Okay, maybe his slump was a bit on the bad side; he did manage to freak out some of his teammates when he got himself stuck between workout equipment, and later got detention for setting off the alarm (he is still not sure why he felt like checking out how hard you need to press on it).
The worst part of this all was the image of Akaashi's face, there, at the end. It's a sight he can't get out of his head for the past week and he doesn't know what to do about it, how to make it better. Maybe because he can't make it better anymore that he's feeling so despondent. Akaashi has another chance to go at it, to win it all and become the best but, the selfish part of him wanted to be there, on the court, with him.
Bokuto sprawls himself across the desk in the library- he's supposed to do assignments for school now that he's dismissed from the club. He COULD go but also teachers will yell at him if he doesn't do work. The point is lost though as he's not writing the essays and instead sulking.
His attention turns when the door of the library open and Akaashi steps in. His stomach drops in the best and worst ways whenever he sees him these days and, as much as he wants to lift himself up from the table, he knows that pretending to be fine is not going to fly with him.]
Hey, 'kaashi.
[His greeting is quiet because librarian slapped a big sign "keep quiet" on bookshelf in front of him.]
[It's not as though the sight of a star player so clearly feeling like anything but doesn't cause Akaashi some level of pain as well. Yet, to still allow it to show at this point would only be selfish.
They were supposed to win. This year was supposed to be their chance, and they'd made it so far. After everything they'd been through, first place was finally within their reach, and if Bokuto had just-- ... Just what, though? Done better? That wasn't right. He'd been amazing even in that moment. To hold himself together like that... How is it that what should only be seen as a failure has etched itself into Akaashi's mind as the strongest the older boy's ever been?
To see him like this now, to be reminded yet again of how temporary it was, it only makes things worse.
The most optimal solution of turning back to study elsewhere and avoid this encounter is deemed impossible as Akaashi hears the other speak, and so he gives a nod at the greeting instead. A more neutral expression than usual crosses his features, offering his equivalent to a soft smile as he continues closer, resigning himself to sit next to his now former teammate.
It could be a disaster. He could quickly come to regret his decision to begin unpacking his bag here rather than at another table. But maybe, just maybe, they'll be fine if they avoid bringing up what's done?]
Bokuto-san,
[His own volume's just as soft, even if the tone may seem a bit scolding.]
[Bokuto's chair makes a bit of a scraping noise as he scoots closer so they can talk. However, his head remains perfectly on the table, just shuffled closer.]
I'm not sleeping. [...] Yet.
[Even if he wanted to sleep he wouldn't be able to. Not with Akaashi around. He looks determined to study...? Maybe? Who knows... Maybe he just came over to sit next to him out of politeness. The guy doesn't really have to spend any more time with him, now that Bokuto's club time has come to an end. But Bokuto would be lying through his teeth if he didn't like the fact that he's here. Because he always liked Akaashi's company, regardless of what they were doing.
Bokuto won't bring up what happened at Nationals, at least not now, as he's still processing it. And when he's done properly assessing everything he's done up until now, he will apologize for it and make a promise to never let it happen again.
Because, of course, Bokuto is going pro with volleyball, there's no question about it.
In the meantime, he turns his head away from Akaashi to look at his bag on the chair next to him, fiddles with it and pulls out a little bag from it. Then turns back to Akaashi (still refusing to lift his head, too heavy from thoughts and thinking), and silently offers-]
