PERSONALITY:
"An opponent you want to cheer for..."
One of the many descriptions that are used for one Bokuto Koutarou. Introduced as a rival to the Karasuno team, Bokuto is the team captain of Fukurodani Academy's volleyball team. He is a third-year student when introduced in the manga and in chapter 378, he is reintroduced as a professional volleyball player, playing for Volleyball Division 1, MSBY Black Jackals as an outside hitter.
The other descriptions that are associated with him are as follow- intimidating, loud, annoying, cheerful, moody, hard-working, boisterous, encouraging, supporting, a child, brutally honest, open. He’s unexpectedly an excellent role model that many look up to (like the protagonist Hinata) and amazing mood-setter.
Bokuto is loud. And no, that doesn't count only his voice either. His overall presence on the court and in the room screams 'pay attention to me!' and people do pay attention. He's difficult to ignore and even harder to avoid if he decides to talk to you. But despite his intimidating exterior and narrowly smirking eyes, Bokuto is nothing if not friendly. He easily befriends people and can be very physically affectionate, much to the others (Tsukishima's) dismay. But he is also known to push the boundaries of friendliness to the test when he comes overbearing because-
-Bokuto craves attention. While getting people to notice him is mostly subconscious, him seeking attention and praise is a very open and obvious thing. He thrives on it, he loves when all eyes are on him and it gives him an incredible confidence boost. He's often seen asking his setter Akaashi for recognition of something he did well. He loves to show off his skills and when he succeeds, he easily fires up people watching him even more. He is an incredible mood-setter, his cheers easily firing up both his teammates and rivals alike. It is a vicious circle of give-and-take until Bokuto messes up. This leads us to Bokuto's major flaw.
Bokuto's dejected mode. This might be one of the main reasons why Bokuto isn't considered the top three aces in the country. When Bokuto fails at something, and he's very aware that he's the sole cause for it, his mood plummets into the ground. And he's not the type that would "sulk it out in the corner". He complains and whines and asks for help from his team. He will never, however, blame anyone else on his team for the mistakes. It is often said that Bokuto is the ‘baby of the team’ even though he doesn’t look like it. His setter, Akaashi, took it upon himself to make sure that Bokuto always stays in top condition and mental state during the game (memorizing at least 37 of Bokuto’s weaknesses). Some weaknesses that are mentioned by Akaashi in the series are-
#6 - he loves to show off;
#37- If he becomes too fixated on one thing, he'll completely forget how to do anything else.
These weaknesses don't affect the basics of his play, but they do lower his energy, his morale, speed, and power- things that he excels at on the court. And while he's usually the one that puts himself in these situations, more often than not he manages to get himself out of them (with a little bit of a nudge from his teammates).
Bokuto's beacon of support. Not as a prominent point of his personality, but Bokuto is often seen supporting and encouraging people around him. Whether it's during the match or off of the court, he can pay attention and offer very good advice. When Tsukishima comes to him for an opinion on "why they work so hard even though it's just a club", Bokuto says that he doesn't understand why he would say that, but accepts his point of view, and says that "when he finds the moment, he'll get hooked onto volleyball". It is later shown just how deep these words remained with Tsukishima, as he remembers them during the game with Shiratorizawa. Bokuto has also declared Hinata as his beloved student and has taught him a lot of things to use in a volleyball match (even though all of those things backfire on him). He is also seen pulling his team and his setter out of a dire state of mind during a very tough match, declaring that he's stopping on being "coddled ace" and becoming just "an ace".
Bokuto is childish/playful. A simpleton, as one of the managers, calls him. When he likes things, he loves them, and he declares loud and proud that he does. When he dislikes them, he admits it with utmost honesty. When something upsets him, he complains and whines until it is fixed. His teammates and close friends are, however, used to this and know exactly how to deal with it. But in most cases, Bokuto can be found in a very good mood, ready to make jokes, play volleyball or go eat barbecue!
POWERS/ABILITIES: Bokuto is regular human being with no superpowers. Whatever he has will be thanks to the moon blessing.
